Dividends and deposit interest are different
Share capital is your ownership stake in the SACCO. It earns a dividend, but you usually cannot withdraw it; you can only sell or transfer it. Deposits are your savings. They earn interest and decide how much you can borrow, often three or four times your deposits. Most members hold far more in deposits than in shares, so the deposit rate usually matters more for your total earnings.
Before joining, check that the SACCO is regulated by SASRA and read its common bond: some SACCOs only accept people in a certain job or employer.
Common questions
When do SACCOs pay dividends?
Most SACCOs announce dividends and interest at their annual general meeting between January and April, and pay soon after.
Can I withdraw my share capital?
Usually not. Share capital is your ownership in the SACCO; you can transfer or sell it to another member. Deposits can be refunded when you leave, subject to notice.
