How much rent can I afford?

The 30% guide
A common rule is to keep rent at or below 30% of your take-home pay. That leaves room for food, transport, school fees, savings and emergencies. If you support family or have loans, aim lower.
Remember the costs that come with a new house: a deposit (often one or two months' rent), water and electricity deposits, and moving costs.

Should I use gross or net pay?
Use your take-home (net) pay after tax and deductions. Our PAYE calculator can work it out from your gross salary.
What other costs come with renting?
Expect a rent deposit, utility deposits, service charge in some apartments, and moving costs.
