A Rwandan payslip usually shows four deductions: PAYE, the RSSB pension contribution, the maternity leave contribution and the community-based health insurance (CBHI) contribution. Together they can take a large share of gross pay, so it helps to know how each is worked out. This guide explains Rwanda's PAYE bands for 2026, the RSSB pension and other social contributions, and how to calculate your take-home pay, with worked examples.

Rwanda PAYE bands

Rwanda taxes employment income on a monthly scale. The first RWF 60,000 is taxed at 0%. Income between RWF 60,000 and RWF 100,000 is taxed at 10%, income between RWF 100,000 and RWF 200,000 at 20%, and income above RWF 200,000 at 30%. These bands have applied since November 2023, when Rwanda widened the lower bands to ease the tax burden on lower earners.

PAYE is worked out on gross pay. Rwanda's income tax law does not allow personal deductions such as pension contributions, so your RSSB contribution does not lower your tax.

RSSB pension and other social contributions

Pension. The Rwanda Social Security Board (RSSB) collects pension contributions of 12% of gross pay in total since January 2025, shared equally: 6% from you and 6% from your employer. This money builds your retirement pension.

Maternity leave. The maternity leave scheme takes 0.3% from you and 0.3% from your employer. It funds paid maternity leave for employees who give birth.

CBHI. The community-based health insurance contribution is 0.5% of your net pay, that is, what is left after PAYE and your RSSB contributions. It supports the national health insurance scheme known as Mutuelle de Santé; read our guide to Mutuelle de Santé in Rwanda.

Worked examples of Rwanda take-home pay

Salary of RWF 300,000 a month. PAYE is RWF 54,000: nothing on the first RWF 60,000, RWF 4,000 on the next RWF 40,000, RWF 20,000 on the next RWF 100,000 and RWF 30,000 on the last RWF 100,000. The pension contribution is RWF 18,000, maternity RWF 900 and CBHI about RWF 1,136. Take-home pay is about RWF 225,965.

Salary of RWF 500,000 a month. PAYE is RWF 114,000, pension RWF 30,000, maternity RWF 1,500 and CBHI about RWF 1,773. Take-home pay is about RWF 352,728.

RSSB pension contributions are rising

Rwanda is gradually increasing pension contributions to give workers a more adequate retirement income. The total pension rate goes up every January: to 14% from 2027, 16% from 2028, 18% from 2029 and 20% from 2030. If it stays shared equally, employees will pay 7% from January 2027. That will lower take-home pay slightly each year, but it will build a noticeably bigger pension over a working life.

Planning around your deductions

Because deductions will keep rising until 2030, it is wise to plan your budget around a slightly lower net salary each January. Many workers top up their long-term savings through the Ejo Heza voluntary scheme, which is open to anyone and comes with government incentives; see our guide to Ejo Heza in Rwanda. For shorter-term goals, Treasury bonds and unit trusts are popular options.

Allowances and benefits

Allowances for transport, housing or communication are generally part of your taxable employment income, so they are included in gross pay when PAYE and RSSB contributions are calculated. Benefits in kind, such as a company car or free housing, are valued and taxed too. Check your contract to see which payments count.

Checking your RSSB contributions

Your employer must declare and pay your contributions to RSSB every month. You can check your contribution history with RSSB, and it is worth doing so once or twice a year. Missing contributions are easier to correct while you still work for the employer concerned.
