PAYE in Tanzania 2026: tax bands, NSSF and your take-home pay
The first TZS 270,000 of monthly taxable pay is tax-free and your pension contribution comes off before tax. Here is how PAYE works in Tanzania in 2026, with examples.
In mainland Tanzania, employers deduct Pay As You Earn (PAYE) from your salary every month using the Tanzania Revenue Authority's monthly tax bands, then pay it to TRA on your behalf. Your pension contribution is taken off first, which lowers the tax. This guide explains the Tanzania PAYE bands for 2026, how NSSF and PSSSF contributions work, and how to calculate your take-home pay, with worked examples.
Step 1: your pension contribution
Most private sector employees belong to the National Social Security Fund (NSSF). They contribute 10% of gross pay, and their employer adds another 10%, so 20% of salary goes towards their pension. Public servants belong to the Public Service Social Security Fund (PSSSF), where the employee pays 5% of gross pay and the employer pays 15%. In both cases, your own contribution is deducted before PAYE, so gross pay minus the pension contribution gives your taxable pay.
Step 2: Tanzania's monthly PAYE bands
Tanzania's PAYE rates are progressive, and each rate applies only to the part of your pay inside its band:
- Up to TZS 270,000: 0%
- TZS 270,000 to 520,000: 8%
- TZS 520,000 to 760,000: 20%
- TZS 760,000 to 1,000,000: 25%
- Above TZS 1,000,000: 30%
The Finance Act 2026 did not change these bands, so they are the same as in the previous year. Because the first TZS 270,000 of taxable pay is tax-free, low earners pay little or no income tax.
Worked examples of Tanzania PAYE
Salary of TZS 800,000 a month. NSSF is TZS 80,000, leaving taxable pay of TZS 720,000. Tax is 8% of the TZS 250,000 between 270,000 and 520,000 (TZS 20,000), plus 20% of the TZS 200,000 above 520,000 (TZS 40,000), giving PAYE of TZS 60,000. Take-home pay is TZS 660,000.
Salary of TZS 1,500,000 a month. NSSF is TZS 150,000, leaving taxable pay of TZS 1,350,000. PAYE is TZS 233,000, and take-home pay is TZS 1,117,000.

Other deductions you may see on your payslip
The Skills and Development Levy, at 3.5% of payroll, is paid by your employer and does not come out of your pay. Employers also pay contributions to the Workers Compensation Fund, again without deducting them from you. Loan repayments to the Higher Education Students' Loans Board, SACCO savings, union dues and other voluntary deductions are separate from tax and are agreed between you, your employer and the lender or organisation concerned.
Understanding your payslip
A clear payslip should show your gross pay, your pension contribution, taxable pay, PAYE and net pay. Check that the pension deduction matches what appears on your NSSF or PSSSF statement, because unpaid contributions are much easier to fix early. Our guide to understanding your payslip in Tanzania walks through each line.
Allowances, bonuses and benefits
Allowances such as housing, transport and overtime are normally part of your taxable employment income, so they are added to gross pay before PAYE is worked out. Bonuses are taxed in the month they are paid, which can push part of that month's pay into a higher band. Benefits in kind, such as a company car, may also be taxable.
PAYE in Zanzibar
Zanzibar has its own tax administration, the Zanzibar Revenue Board, and its own rules for some taxes. The figures in this guide apply to mainland Tanzania, so employees in Zanzibar should check with their employer or the Revenue Board.
Tips to make the most of your pay
Once you know your take-home pay, set a monthly budget and save a fixed amount as soon as your salary arrives. Unit trusts such as the UTT AMIS funds and government Treasury bills are popular ways to grow savings in Tanzania; see our guides to UTT AMIS unit trusts and Treasury bills in Tanzania.
