Money in United States today
The Federal Reserve's interest rate, the latest inflation figure and what the US dollar is worth today, with what they mean for your savings and loans.
Federal funds rate (midpoint) decided 28 October 2026 (target range 3.75% to 4.00%). Inflation from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
What is happening
The Federal Reserve held its target range at 3.75% to 4.00% on 28 October 2026; two officials voted for a rise. Consumer prices were 3.7% higher in September than a year earlier, above the Fed's 2% goal.
What it means for you
- Savers: interest rates are above inflation, so savings accounts, money market funds and government bills that pay close to the central bank rate can grow faster than prices. Compare what you earn after tax with the 3.7% inflation rate.
- Borrowers: bank lending rates and variable-rate loans follow the central bank.
- Prices: inflation of 3.7% means something that cost 1,000 a year ago costs about 1,037 now.
